| The Complete Book of Home Decorating, hardcover with dust jacket, copyright 1972 by Fawcett Publications/ Grosset & Dunlap. It is a gigantic book with 498 pages. Illustrated in color plus black and white.
Chapters include Style ideas (Traditional, early American, Modern, Oriental, Wicker, Eclectic, Mediterranean); Living Rooms; Bedrooms; Children's Rooms; Kitchen; Bathroom; Family Room; Guest Room; Utiltiy Rooms; Sitting Rooms; Special Rooms; Foyers; Windows; Doors; Ceilings; Walls; Floors; Carpets & Rugs; Attics; Basements; Porch; Patios and Pools; Penthouse; Designer Ideas; Folding Screens; Fireplaces; Room dividers; Shelves; Paintings; Area Rugs; and Designer Carvings.
If you hated the 70’s the first time around, you should definitely skip this book. If you LOVED it then this book will be fun reading for you. Much of this book’s contents are unbelievably, amazingly tacky and in horrendous taste. (You did see the word “Wicker” in the paragraph above, right?) Having said that, there is some really good stuff in this book too. It is what it is…a typical 1970’s middle class mainstream guide to home décor. It does give great insight into what was popular in the early 70’s (as if you didn’t already know that anyway), and there are quite a few interesting and workable ideas in there. Especially for those who appreciate the disco aesthetic. I personally tend to prefer the pages that are in black and white and let my own imagination fill in the colors…also worth noting, the pages aren’t amazingly high-quality which can be distracting.
